Data, just like all resources, has to be often moved when upgrading or switching equipment, moving a business to another location or merging resources with another system. While the transition of sensitive and valuable data can be quite daunting, it can be a relatively safe and secure action; if one follows the following suggestions.
First, simply understanding the current mapping of the data servers can help one recreate the same environment on the new server that the data is being migrated to. Next, data migration can take a long time and utilize a large number of available resources during the process. Knowing the speed and performance of the equipment you are working with as well as the data’s size can help plan what to transfer, how long it will take, and what amount of expected downtime will occur. Failing to understand how impacted the whole systems’ performance will be during the migration can cause severe problems with the day-to-day operations of the whole system.
Because of these potential issues, it is also recommended to know full well which employees possess the skills to perform this migration during all stages: initial planning, migration process, and finally performing final checks that the migration was successful. Using virtualization can make migration both simple, yet challenging at the same time. While it is helpful to perform migration tests using virtual machines before the actual migration is performed on the physical hardware, migrating VMs with physical servers can be tricky. Using VMware’s VMotion allows users to carry out love migrations with no downtime, which can be very appealing to some. Data migration is something we all will face in life, however, by understanding the risks and benefits, as well as how to properly perform the migration, it can be a piece of cake.
